Use of the General Inpatient (GIP) Level of Care is high on CMS’ radar where hospices are evaluated on both the lack of provision or excessive provision of this higher level of care. This course will provide guidance on appropriate utilization, documentation and billing of GIP care, while also offering strategies for strengthening your hospice’s GIP practice. Hospice medical directors, hospice physicians, nurse practitioners and hospice administration should not miss this intensive course designed to maximize hospice GIP compliance.

Dr. Lauren Templeton, a Physician Consultant with Weatherbee Resources since 2017, has been a physician since 2009 and a hospice and palliative medicine physician since 2012. Dr. Templeton began her career in internal medicine, but soon thereafter was drawn to end-of-life care due to its overall philosophy and her passion for ensuring a dignified death for her patients.
She currently works in hospice for The Pennant Group as a hospice physician member of their physician council. In this role, she assists with compliance, quality improvement and documentation review. The Pennant Group is a leadership company providing services in the post-acute care space. As such, Dr. Templeton regularly coaches towards excellence within the hospice space.
Dr. Templeton’s mission is to help support hospices by educating on the role of the hospice medical director from a regulatory and clinical perspective. She has served as a task force member and item writer for the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board from which she is certified. She continues a robust educational program within her own hospice program and is a regular speaker with the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization
An advocate of the hospice benefit, Dr. Templeton speaks to groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association about hospice care. She currently serves as a member of the Alliance’s Regulatory Committee assisting in advocating for hospice providers across the country. Dr. Templeton is a faculty member of Weatherbee’s Hospice Regulatory Boot Camp and the Hospice Compliance Network (HCN).
Dr. Templeton graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts and received her doctor of osteopathy from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and is board certified with the American College of Osteopathic Internists. She completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Texas Tech University and became board certified in hospice and palliative medicine in 2013. She obtained additional certification with the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board in 2018.
In November of 2022, Dr. Templeton earned the designation Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. The Academy is the professional organization for physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine, nurses, and other healthcare providers.

Focusing on enhancement of the Nurse Practitioner’s clinical assessment and documentation of the Face-to-Face Encounter (F2FE), this one-day course delineates the roles of the nurse practitioner and the hospice physician. This course will include an in-depth review of disease trajectories, Local Coverage Determination (LCD) guidelines, and hospice assessment tools and how to include these elements in the F2FE documentation to assist the certifying physician in making a strong prognostication decision. This course is designed to share best practice documentation tips to ensure F2FE documentation enhances the patient’s clinical record and serves as a great tool for the recertifying physician.

This all-day event will provide the hospice physician with a comprehensive regulatory foundation of the Medicare Hospice Benefit. This foundation is essential for hospice physician leadership and engagement in hospice compliance. This course is applicable to all hospice physicians including those new to hospice, preparing for Initial HMDC Certification, or seasoned physicians looking to re-engage with their organization. Dr. Lauren Templeton, a Physician Consultant with Weatherbee Resources since 2017, has been a physician since 2009 and a hospice and palliative medicine physician since 2012. Dr. Templeton began her career in internal medicine, but soon thereafter was drawn to end-of-life care due to its overall philosophy and her passion for ensuring a dignified death for her patients.
She currently works in hospice for The Pennant Group as a hospice physician member of their physician council. In this role, she assists with compliance, quality improvement and documentation review. The Pennant Group is a leadership company providing services in the post-acute care space. As such, Dr. Templeton regularly coaches towards excellence within the hospice space.
Dr. Templeton’s mission is to help support hospices by educating on the role of the hospice medical director from a regulatory and clinical perspective. She has served as a task force member and item writer for the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board from which she is certified. She continues a robust educational program within her own hospice program and is a regular speaker with the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization
An advocate of the hospice benefit, Dr. Templeton speaks to groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association about hospice care. She currently serves as a member of the Alliance’s Regulatory Committee assisting in advocating for hospice providers across the country. She completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Texas Tech University and became board certified in hospice and palliative medicine in 2013. She obtained additional certification with the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board in 2018.
In November of 2022, Dr. Templeton earned the designation Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. Carrie Cooley is the Principal of Weatherbee Resources. Carrie joined Weatherbee in 2009 as an Associate Consultant and was hired as the Consulting Coordinator in 2012. As the Principal of Weatherbee Resources, she leads the strategic growth initiatives for Weatherbee, providing invaluable expertise to individual hospices and the entire field. Carrie's mission is to prepare and support hospices navigating the ever-changing regulatory hospice environment. Carrie and the Weatherbee team focus on delivering consulting services and education that is specifically tailored to meet each client's individual needs.
Carrie's regulatory expertise and extensive consulting experience includes forensic clinical record auditing, baseline compliance audits/mock surveys, interim management, clinical due diligence, and executive coaching. Carrie also works directly with clients' legal counsel in preparation for arbitration and other hearings; she serves as an expert witness. Weatherbee also works extensively with clients who are under a Corporate Integrity Agreement (CIA); Carrie and the Consulting team manage the Independent Review Organization (IRO) audit activities required by the Office of Inspector General (OIG). Carrie's excellent rapport with executives and staff alike – coupled with her regulatory and clinical acumen, and knowledge of best practices – assures excellent consulting outcomes.

As a member of Weatherbee's Speaker's Bureau, Carrie teaches a broad range of hospice, regulatory, and leadership-related topics nationally and is a member of the faculty for Weatherbee's renowned Hospice Regulatory Boot Camps. Payment-related audits from CMS contractors pose the greatest financial risk to hospice providers today. However, many hospices remain ill-equipped to properly respond to these audits (e.g., Targeted Probe and Educate (TPE), Supplemental Medical Review Contractor (SMRC), or Unified Program Integrity Contractor (UPIC) audits, etc.) and mitigate payment-related denials during the Medicare appeals process. In this course, the teams from Weatherbee Resources and the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board (HMDCB) will take a deep dive into the most prevalent audits and share a step-by-step plan to ensure a timely and comprehensive response from initial clinical record submission to the provision of expert witness testimony at the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) appeal level or beyond. This course is designed for hospice leaders, medical directors, hospice physicians, clinical managers, compliance officers, and billing personnel.

Lauren Templeton, DO FAAHPM HMDC

Dr. Lauren Templeton, a Physician Consultant with Weatherbee Resources since 2017, has been a physician since 2009 and a hospice and palliative medicine physician since 2012. Dr. Templeton began her career in internal medicine, but soon thereafter was drawn to end-of-life care due to its overall philosophy and her passion for ensuring a dignified death for her patients.
She currently works in hospice for The Pennant Group as a hospice physician member of their physician council. In this role, she assists with compliance, quality improvement and documentation review. The Pennant Group is a leadership company providing services in the post-acute care space. As such, Dr. Templeton regularly coaches towards excellence within the hospice space.
Dr. Templeton’s mission is to help support hospices by educating on the role of the hospice medical director from a regulatory and clinical perspective. She has served as a task force member and item writer for the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board from which she is certified. She continues a robust educational program within her own hospice program and is a regular speaker with the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization
An advocate of the hospice benefit, Dr. Templeton speaks to groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association about hospice care. She currently serves as a member of the Alliance’s Regulatory Committee assisting in advocating for hospice providers across the country. Dr. Templeton is a faculty member of Weatherbee’s Hospice Regulatory Boot Camp and the Hospice Compliance Network (HCN).
Dr. Templeton graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts and received her doctor of osteopathy from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and is board certified with the American College of Osteopathic Internists. She completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Texas Tech University and became board certified in hospice and palliative medicine in 2013. She obtained additional certification with the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board in 2018.
In November of 2022, Dr. Templeton earned the designation Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. The Academy is the professional organization for physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine, nurses, and other healthcare providers.

Colleen O’Keefe is the Senior Project Specialist for Weatherbee Resources. Colleen has served as an RN Case Manager, Supervisor for a Continuous Home Care team, Clinical Educator, and Compliance Officer. Her clinical, regulatory, and leadership expertise allows her to deliver uncompromising consulting services.
As a Senior Consultant & Project Specialist with Weatherbee Resources, Colleen conducts clinical record audits for hospice organizations facing Additional Development Requests, writes independent expert cover letters to support technical and clinical eligibility for hospice care, and provides assistance and guidance throughout the appeals process. Colleen conducts comprehensive baseline assessment audits and mock surveys to assess regulatory compliance and identify potential risk exposures, and devises action plans to address problem areas. She also conducts education for hospice organizations across the country. Colleen also has experience and expertise in conducting investigations for hospices facing payment-related scrutiny by governmental agencies.

Amy Francoeur, Associate Consultant with Weatherbee Resources brings more than 20 years of healthcare experience to our team. Amy has spent the last 15+ years working in home health and hospice, successfully leading teams through ACHC and CHAP accreditation surveys.
Serving in various leadership roles Amy has assisted in the development of non-profit hospice agencies to promote growth in census, create engaging QAPI programs, improve scheduling efficiencies and broaden employee learning platforms. Focusing on quality of care and strict regulatory compliance, Amy works with hospice agencies to ensure accurate and timely response to Additional Documentation Requests while developing and educating clinicians to improve quality patient outcomes.
Amy has advocated for hospice beneficiaries and agencies by providing expert testimony to the Michigan State House of Representatives and the Michigan State Senate to protect the rights of hospice patients and ensure they receive appropriate care. These testimonies also supported the decrease of barriers for physicians when prescribing symptom relieving medications and treatments for hospice patients.
In 2024 Amy became a certified accreditation consultant with both the Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc., (ACHC) and the Community Healthcare Accreditation Partner (CHAP). This course will include an in-depth review of disease trajectories, Local Coverage Determination (LCD) guidelines, and hospice assessment tools and how to include these elements in the F2FE documentation to assist the certifying physician in making a strong prognostication decision. The Pennant Group is a leadership company providing services in the post-acute care space. As such, Dr. Templeton regularly coaches towards excellence within the hospice space.
Dr. Templeton’s mission is to help support hospices by educating on the role of the hospice medical director from a regulatory and clinical perspective. She has served as a task force member and item writer for the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board from which she is certified. She continues a robust educational program within her own hospice program and is a regular speaker with the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization
An advocate of the hospice benefit, Dr. Templeton speaks to groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association about hospice care. She currently serves as a member of the Alliance’s Regulatory Committee assisting in advocating for hospice providers across the country. Dr. Templeton is a faculty member of Weatherbee’s Hospice Regulatory Boot Camp and the Hospice Compliance Network (HCN).
Dr. Templeton graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts and received her doctor of osteopathy from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and is board certified with the American College of Osteopathic Internists. She completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Texas Tech University and became board certified in hospice and palliative medicine in 2013. She obtained additional certification with the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board in 2018.
In November of 2022, Dr. Templeton earned the designation Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM). This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a member. The Academy is the professional organization for physicians specializing in hospice and palliative medicine, nurses, and other healthcare providers.
